This photograph was taken in 2019, during an expedition in the Peruvian Amazon alongside the Wampis people.
We were traveling along a river still wrapped in mist, as the forest seemed suspended between what reveals itself and what chooses to remain unseen.
The Wampis were the first Indigenous group to declare independence and claim sovereignty over their own territory. Yet, here, none of that needed to be stated aloud.
Autonomy was present in the way time was inhabited, in how the river was read, in how the landscape was crossed without the urge to dominate it.
Sometimes the forest does not impose itself.
It observes — and waits for us to learn how to do the same.
